  International Workshop on Earth Observation and Remote Sensing Applications (EORSA)

Geospatial Technology is one of the three emerging technologies in the 21st century. Driven by societal and economical needs, Earth Observation (EO) and remote sensing techniques are now in the frontiers of the geospatial technology, and have received an increasing interest in the academic, government, industries, and beyond. At the mean time, over the past few decades, global change has been gaining increasing attention in the scientific community. The complexity of global change and its interactions with physical and human systems pose significant challenges to the scientific community. Applied Earth Observations and remote sensing technologies with the capability for handling geospatial data and analysis of some complex systems have been extensively and effectively employed for understanding the problems of global change and for providing potential solutions. 

The intents for organizing International Workshops on Earth Observation and Remote Sensing Applications are three-fold: (1) To build a platform for academic exchanges among researchers from within- and outside-China with interests in Earth observation technologies and remote sensing applications; (2) To promote researches on remote sensing and other geospatial technologies in China and Asia; and (3) To provide an opportunity for discussing potential international collaboration and cooperation activities for researchers with similar interests. 

The 1st Workshop (EORSA 2008):

The first EORSA conference was held in Beijing on June 30-July 1, 2008. The event, sponsored by IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society, was very successful one, resulting in great attention in the Earth Observation and geospatial technologies circle inside and outside China, with over a hundred participants representing twenty nations in the world. The first workshop has generated an EI indexed conference proceeding for the registered participants. Furthermore, a special issue of IEEE JSTARS was published in September 2009, which focuses on remote sensing of regional land use and land cover. As a result of the workshop, substantial international collaboration and cooperation activities from researchers with similar interests are emerging.

The 2nd Workshop (EORSA 2012):

With the purview of “continued tradition, and expanded vision”, the second workshop (EORSA 2012) was successfully held in Shanghai, China, from June 8  to 11, 2012, with an overall theme of "geoinformatics in global changes" . This event was jointly organized by Tongji University, Peking University, Nanjing University, China, and Indiana State University, USA, with technical sponsorship from IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society, International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS), and Group on Earth Observation (GEO). During the two and a half days event, there were over 200 attendees, representing 22 countries in the world. Two pre-conference workshops attracted approximately 50 participants.

  • Special Stream at IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters (GRSL) [link to the special issue] (Vol. 10, Issues 5 and 6, 2013)
  • A special symposium on GEO Global Urban Observation and Information (SB-04) task was held in conjunction with the EORSA 2012.
  • A special session named “Meeting with Editors” featured editors of several major remote sensing journals as the panelists.

The 3rd Workshop (EORSA 2014):

The Third International Workshop on Earth Observation and Remote Sensing Applications (EORSA 2014) was held in Changsha, Hunan Province, China, from June 11-14, 2014, with the theme of “Global Change and Sustainable Development: A Remote Sensing Perspective”. During the three and a half days event, there were over 200 attendees, representing more than 20 countries in the world. Among the 255 submissions, the conference program committee selected 57 papers for oral presentation, 40 papers for interactive / short presentation, and 80 papers as posters. In addition, 8 keynote speakers gave addresses in three plenary sessions on the latest research, techniques, and products related to Earth observation and remote sensing, and the challenges to future discovery. Two special symposia, one on GEO Global Urban Observation and Information (SB-04) Task and the other on Remote Sensing of Forestry Resources, were held concurrently. The conference participants showed great interests in these symposia. Proceeding to the conference, approximately 60 young researchers and students participated in pre-conference workshops in the field of urban remote sensing, LiDAR, and InSAR, respectively.

The 4th Workshop (EORSA 2016):

The fourth workshop (EORSA 2016) was successfully held in Guangzhou, China, from July 4  to 6, 2016, with an overall theme of "Societal and Economic Benefits of Earth Observation Technologies" . This event was jointly organized by South China Normal University, South China Agriculture University, Guangzhou University, Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, China, and Indiana State University, USA, with technical sponsorship from IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society, International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS), and Group on Earth Observation (GEO). During the two and a half days event, there were over 200 attendees, representing 20 countries in the world.

Some Outcomes of EORSA 2016:

The 5th Workshop (EORSA 2018):

The fifth EORSA conference was held in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, China, from June 17-20, 2018, with more than 230 hundred participants. The overall theme of EORSA 2018 is “Ecological Civilization and Sustainable Development: Contribution of Remote Sensing”. While the conference continues with its traditions of academic exchange, knowledge discovery, collaboration and networking, EORSA 2018 expands with new dimensions and features, especially with new application areas of EO technology in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and UAV. The EORSA 2018 coincides with the Dragon 4 Mid-term Symposium (19 to 22 June 2018) in Xi’an. This joint event provides a unique opportunity for the EORSA attendants to interact with researchers and students from the three continents - Asia, America, and Europe, and enhanced the mechanism of EORSA as a coordinator of Earth observations, monitoring, forecasting, and assessment initiatives worldwide.

The fifth workshop has generated an EI indexed conference proceeding for the registered participants. Furthermore, a special issue of IEEE JSTARS is under development to be published in early 2020, which focuses on environemtnal sustainability in the Asia-Pacific region.
